Spikeman Knives

Yesterday, my brothers and my mom went to Gary's house to watch him make some knives out of railroad spikes. It was pretty neat how he makes them.



First, he gets a spike and gets it really hot in his gas forge that runs on propane. Then, he flattens the spike about halfway with a blacksmith's hammer. After that, he would get it hot again and put it in a vise. Then he would start to twist the bottom of it to make a little twisty mark on it like shown above. And then he does the artwork on it like the eagle head. Tommy couldn't resist, so he bought one from him.

Yesterday, we went to Gary Hemenway's garage to watch him make knives out of railroad spikes. Gary has his own gas forge which he uses to heat up the metal to white hot so he can shape it with his hammer. His garage is full of old tools, scrap metal, (he prefers old tools to new tools) and driftwood. He also carves driftwood with his dremel tools and adds a gloss cover to make the wood shine. Gary was a real nice guy and he makes some real nice knives.

I also bought a knife with a eagle head at the handle there should be a picture above. It's really cool :)

(Mr. Henenway offered to teach the boys how to make their own knives and swords. Needless to say, they are very excited to find some railroad spikes so they can try it out)
