Chrisitan Heritage Familly Discipleship and Homeschool Conference 2016
M Troop attended, for the first time, a homeschool conference. We were all incredibly blessed. The selection of speakers was pretty impressive.
Keynote - Dr. Joel Beeke message on Prov 23:1-28. Main ideas from my notes: paramount that we instill truth into our children...daily family discipleship. Model confession...follow me in so far as I follow Christ. After children are married, only offer advice if asked. His books are through Reformation Heritage Books. I was really interested in "Meet the Puritans" and "Puritan Theology". I would have bought them, but their booth was always packed!
Keynote - Paul Washer message on 1 John 5:13. Biblical Tests of True Faith.
1. v.7 Genuine Christians walk in the light
2. v.11 " " recognize their sin, it breaks their hearts, they confess to God
3. " " desire to know the Law of God
4. " " desire to be like their Lord and Master, Jesus Christ
5. " " truly love other believers
Chuck Black - Revelation Generation: Preparing Our Children for Days to Come
He is a former F16 fighter pilot. He talked about their standing EP (emergency procedures). They would drill over what to do in specific circumstances. We are launching our children into a hostile environment and should be doing something similar except on things of faith. Matthew 24:4 is like the Cliffs Notes for Revelation. We need to prepare them for what they will face.
1. Know what you believe
2. Know what is coming
3. Know what you will do
Remember
1. That God will never abandon you
2. He will give you courage
3. God is a God of justice. He will make things right.
4. God is stronger than the enemy
5. God is faithful
We can role-play antagonistic professors. How will our children answer?
Dr. Rob Rienow - Encouraging Faith in Adult Children
It is never too late. You are not alone (2/3rd of empty nest Christians have at least 1 child far from God)
Set your heart and mind clearly on the goal: That our children will love God with all their heart, soul, and might.
Principles to help:
1. Offer your heart to the Lord
2. Turn your heart to your child
3. Draw your child's heart to yours
4. Point your child's heart to Christ
Cassie Michael - Being Hospitable on a Budget and General Frugal Homemaking
With her husband, Alex, they are the Thrifty Couple . They actually started out right after marriage as the Unthrifty couple. They got into $100k consumer debt in just a few years. They were able to get out of debt in 7 years! Their website is full of helpful ideas on frugal living, DIY, finances, recipes, and way more. They also mentioned A Candle in the Window Ministry . This is a hospitality network of Christians around the world. For $30 a year you can join. You have to go through a screening process. We are going to look into doing this. I can't imagine how many people would be coming this way, but you never know! What a wonderful opportunity to fellowship with other Believers from all around the nation/world and show them brotherly/sisterly love. Another thing I picked up from her was to have the goal of being able to invite someone over for lunch after church on Sunday. What a challenge because our house usually isn't presentable nor do I have food ready!
I also listened to Mary Beeke - How to Cultivate Kindness in Children.
Douglas Bond-Why Every Christian Must Know Church History.
1. Great Heroes of the faith - ones worthy of imitation
2. Don't be surprised by persecution
3. Don't be envious of the wicked...don't over simplify the mystery of God's way...bad things happen to the godly and ungodly
4. Keeps us from chronological snobbery
5. Greater confidence in the sovereignty of God
6. Will know what corruption looks like and how it can creep into a church
7. Fix your eyes upon Christ
Andy bought his new book and is almost done with it. The rest of us will have to draw straws to see who gets to read it next!
Dean Kershner, a missionary to Russia, did a dramatization of Vanya. It was very moving. It is about a young Christian man who stands firm to the end. I should have bought the book.
I will have some other members of M Troop write what they thought of the conference.
